Café to Café 150

Event Information

May 2-4, 2003, there will be another one of our famous walks in Colorado. The concept: walking as a group on flat trails for about 15 miles, resting, eating, drinking at a little Café, doing another 15 miles, … and so on. In addition we will have a “moving aid station”. - That sounds like fun and it will be!

But it nevertheless will also be a very tough event for a group of dedicated "ultra-walkers", trying to achieve something that is unique in America. The goal for this group is to walk together 150 miles on city trails in 50 hours. To get the synergy-effect of the group, we will assist each other whenever we can. There will be no whining, no complaining, etc. Make sure that you are mentally and physically prepared.

General

·        This will probably be the toughest event you ever did – especially when you are going for the full 150 miles

·         But you also never before walked such a distance with so many good friends

·         And … you never had so much fun walking, walking, walking, …

Style

·         Pay $30 and go as far as you can. We all start together doing loops  from and to Starbucks (loops are color coded on the schedule and will be on the map shortly). Minimum distance is 40 miles (first loop). After that walkers may stop for some miles and then join the group again. In this case they have to care for their transport to the next Café - NO exceptions. As we are doing loops, it is also possible to skip a full loop. But all walkers should do the last leg together, reaching the finish line as a group. Just ask us if you have questions about this concept.

·         Walking, no running.  Staying together as a group. The speed will be determined by a pre-defined schedule as well as by the group leader (Ulli). We start with about 4.5 mi/hr.

·         For the concept of “group walks” see also reports about “Ultrawalk 200” and “Café to Café 100” on our webpage

·         Detailed schedule

Course

·         150 miles in several loops

·         The course is not marked

·         Paved and hard sand city trails (trail gators will be convenient)

·         At night a flashlight is necessary for parts of the course

·         Course map North / South (it may take a little bit to load it)

Aid Stations

·         About every 15-20 miles at a little Café or Deli. Immediate service at Cafés cannot be guaranteed, but in many cases it’s self-serve. Waiting time to be used for changing, etc.

·         In between Cafés there may be a short stop at a moving aid station

·         The organization will transport 1 drop-bag per walker to some aid stations and Cafés

·         We will pass the start/finish area also during the event a few times

·         No medical assistance on the course and at aid stations. Ulli will carry a cellular phone for emergencies

·         Of course a couple of miles before the finish we will have our "Champagne Station"

Crews

·         Crews are not mandatory but are recommended

·         It may take hours, before walkers dropping out at aid stations, can be brought back to the start/finish by the organization. Besides having a crew, a taxi may be the best solution.

·         Crews can access points on the course outside of aid stations. In this case crews have to provide assistance to all walkers and not just "their" walker
